What are hip precautions?
Hip precautions where designed to help prevent a hip dislocation in the early period after hip replacement surgery (most hip dislcocations occur within the first 6 weeks). These include not bending your hip greater than 90 degrees, not sitting in a low chair or toilet, not crossing your legs, not sleeping on your side or using a hip abduction pillow while laying in bed. These precautions are generally reserved for patients who had a traditional posterior or lateral approach or revision hip replacement. Most patients who have a direct anterior hip replacement do not need to follow the strict hip precautions and may sleep on their side after surgery. However, these patients should avoid hyper-extension of the leg.
