How often should I see my surgeon?
Our patients are usually seen at 4 weeks, 3 months, and 1 year after surgery. Then at least every 5 years after surgery to monitor for loosening of the implant or wearing out of the plastic parts. These implants can wear out in 12-15 years, so we recommend patients be seen by an orthopedic surgeon when you get about 12 years out from surgery, even if you do not think there is anything wrong. When the plastic starts to wear out, there is often no pain.
At Joint Specialis of WNC, we are a referral center for worn out and failed joint replacements, so we are happy to see those patients who had their surgery a decade ago and have lost touch with their orthopedic surgeon.
